Issue Position: Responsible and Balanced Budget

Issue Position

Finding intelligent and creative ways to manage our financial resources

* A responsible and intelligent budget works within the constraints of the available resources, while providing adequate support to help all of Minnesota's families, communities and businesses thrive.
* A budget that takes money from our education system is irresponsible, because it takes resources away from our children and harms the prospects of future generations.
* Minnesota's tax code is regressive -- that is, the less money you make, the more taxes you pay. Minnesota's middle class, for instance, pays 10.7 percent of their income in state and local taxes, while those with the highest income pay only 7.7 percent. As a legislator, I would not increase the tax burden already held by Minnesota's working and middle classes, while making sure that the state's wealthiest pay their fair share.
* I oppose the proposed Voter ID amendment. Not only is it a thinly veiled attempt at voter suppression, it also will cost Minnesotans millions of dollars to implement and maintain.
